Human Rights Although there is no universally agreed definition, it is generally understood that ‘human rights’ are principles which enable us to respect each other and live with each other, and they demonstrate that human beings are aware of each other’s dignity and worth. This book explains the concept of human rights, which covers every area of human activity (notably civil and political rights, economic and social rights, and individual and collective rights), and looks at how international and domestic laws function under the guidance of the United Nations. It also reports on the state of human rights in Australia, and explores the ongoing national debate for an Australian Bill of Rights in light of the recently enacted ACT Human Rights Act 2004.
